2017 Season - Week 22
Fly Eagles Fly, On The Road To Victory!
What a stunning offensive Superbowl we had, with more yards being racked up than in any NFL game ever, 1,151 yards. Stunning throws, great catches, missed kicks, fourth-down gambles including the greatest play in a Superbowl ever and a Hail Mary at the end that after several deflections was caught on the bounce one handed by Danny Amendola. Under the BUMS “one bounce one hand rule” Patriots win the Superbowl! Nick Foles was the game’s MVP but he didn’t even have the best passer rating at 106.1. Tom Brady threw for 505 yards and had a passer rating of 115.4, but he didn’t have the best passer rating either. That went to third string TE Trey Burton whose 1 of 1 for 1 yard and a TD (to Foles) gave him an NFL passer rating of 118.8. With that defeat the New England Patriots dynasty over the past 17 years have appeared in 8 Superbowls, winning 5 of them.
BUMSBowl XXII
In a very close contest with the lead tied or changed 10 times the most important play of the game may have been the defensive strip sack of Tom Brady by Brandon Graham with just 2 minutes & 16 seconds left to play. Johnnie was leading by a point but after the turnover Chief’s kicker Eagle Jake Elliott hit a Superbowl rookie record 46 yard field goal & Chief handed Johnnie his first defeat in the BUMSBowl after winning his two previous visits. With that victory the Langley Raiders over the past 18 years have appeared in 7 BUMSBowls, winning 4 of them.
All-BUMS 2017
The 2017 BUMS Player of the Year is the Eagle who didn’t play in the Superbowl. Carson Wentz scored 22.5 points. Saints rookie rusher Alvin Kamara (20 pts) is joined in the backfield by Todd Gurley making his second start (also 20 pts), while Le’Veon Bell is a backup for the third time, along with Kareem Hunt. Tom Brady is the backup QB (his second in that role with one start). Antonio Brown led the receivers for his second start (with 2 support slots), along with DeAndre Hopkins and Adam Thielen. Julio Jones (2 start) is a backup for the first time, as is Marvin Jones and Michael Thomas. Rams high scoring Greg Zuerlein is a first time starter as is their 31 year old Head Coach Sean McVay. The 12 BUMS who voted made a record 63 different choices for their favourite players (see votes attached).
Supergames & Superfood
8 gamblers put money up on BUMSBowl XXII with three making a profit. Johnnie doubled his money by taking a quarter share in the first kicker & correctly predicting Phili would lead at the end of 3 of the 4 quarters. Aaron made £9 being closest to the half time and full time scores (plus first scorer) as did Andy H who shared half time score, first scorer and put together the best team with Foles, Elliott, Blount, Gronkowski, Jeffery & Amendola scoring 50 points. A huge thanks to Cheryl as always, for a Super Bowl feast of Phili Cheesesteaks & Boston Baked Beans to fortify the seven fans in attendance through to 4am. Cheryl on behalf of all BUMS that have attended across the season can I say a huge thank you for all the fine food you have prepared, and the same goes to Johnnie our other host this season.
